Podcasts 3: Podcasts for Contractors

Contracting requires skills many developers haven't invested much time in, as they adapt to a different way of approaching work.

Following on from Podcasts 2: Podcasts for Developers, this article highlights two podcasts which may help that.

Of the podcasts I listen to, these are among the best. I rarely skip any episodes of these and usually find some useful content.

The Freelancers Show

Hosted by a panel of veteran freelancers, the Freelancers Show offers up a different topic every week, usually around running your own business, finding work and dealing with clients.

The panel contains a few fixed members and one or two guests each time, filling the hour with useful advice drawn from their own experiences and covering the subject in a detailed manner.

Simple Programming Podcast

Hosted by John Sonmaz, this is one of the shorter podcasts you will listen to, averaging between 5 and 10 minutes in length 3 times a week and focuses on soft skills. Simple Programmer Podcast answers one (or a few related) question from a listener each week relating to the soft skills every developer needs but many have neglected.

The podcasts are kept short, and I´ve found the advice some of the most useful in my contracting career with topics ranging from interviews and negotiation to fitness, personal projects and finances. John will often plug his related books, online courses and other materials and I´ve actually used some of these (and made good use of them).
